Key Insights and Lessons Learned

  • Treat research as ongoing. Global events and national priorities can shift quickly—refresh your understanding regularly rather than treating research as a one-time task. Focus on alignment, not just depth. Build from the host country’s concept note, but center your analysis on where countries are likely to align or oppose proposals.

  • Balance structure with flexibility. Some meetings are best for listening, others for advancing priorities—know which role you are playing.

  • Build relationships in advance. Schedule one-on-one (or bilateral) calls with track delegates before the summit—this trust pays off during heated negotiations. Relationship building extends to your own delegation; rely on your team. Coordinate frequently, share updates, and use your delegation as a sounding board to stay cohesive and strategic.
