Ashton is an Economist in the International Trade and Finance Branch of the Department of Finance Canada. Originally from Mississauga, Ashton obtained his Honours B.A in Political Science from McGill University and his M.A in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Ashton was involved in the International Relations Students’ Association of McGill, where he helped organize Canada’s largest Model UN conference for high school students (SSUNS), and participated in a youth delegation to the UN Commission for Social Development (CSocD).
Ashton currently works on trade issues related to the aluminum sector, Buy Canada, subsidies, and Canada-China relations. Previously, at Environment Canada, Ashton was part of the team that co-leads the negotiations on Canada’s Environment Chapter. During his internship at the Canadian Permanent Mission in Vienna, Ashton analyzed communiqué negotiations taking place at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ashton previously participated as a YDC delegate to the 2021 WTO Public Forum.
In his spare time, Ashton likes travelling, learning new languages, exploring new restaurants and bars, and staying informed on current events.
